Where do I find my VIN and how is it structured
What is a VIN?
The VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) is the unique 17-character chassis number. It is the unique 'DNA' of your vehicle and is indispensable for maintenance, insurance, and checking the vehicle history.
How do you read a VIN code?
The 17-character code is internationally standardized and consists of three fixed parts:
- Positions 1-3 (WMI): Tell you where and by which manufacturer the car was made (e.g., Germany, Volkswagen).
- Positions 4 & 5 (Model and body type): These letters or numbers indicate the model (e.g., a Golf or a Polo) and the body style (e.g., a hatchback, station wagon, or convertible).
- Positions 6 & 7 (Engine and transmission): This part codes the type of engine installed (e.g., 1.5 TSI, 2.0 TDI, or electric) and sometimes also the type of gearbox (manual or automatic).
- Position 8 (Safety and equipment): Often used for the type of brakes, the number of airbags, or the specific trim level (e.g., a sports or luxury version).
- Position 9 (The check digit): This is a special digit or the letter 'X'. This is a mathematical check code that computers can use to immediately see if the VIN is authentic or if it has been tampered with.
- Positions 10-17 (VIS): The unique section. This contains the model year, the specific factory, and your car's unique serial number.
Where can I find the VIN?
- Documents: On your registration certificate or insurance policy.
- Vehicle: Often on the lower left behind the windshield, in the driver's door jamb, or under the hood.
Tip: The letters I, O, and Q are never used to prevent confusion with the numbers 1 and 0.
